Massachusetts Medicare Supplement Plans

Massachusetts is one of only three states that do not offer the 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans. Massachusetts offers two plans: the Core Plan and the Supplement 1 Plan.

Massachusetts Core Plan

The Massachusetts Core Plan is the more basic of the two Medigap options within the state. Its benefits include:

  • Coverage for Medicare Part A co-insurance (inpatient hospital stay) plus coverage for 365 additional days after Medicare coverage ends
  • Coverage for Medicare Part B co-insurance (generally 20% of the Medicare-approved amount)
  • Coverage for the first three pints of blood each year
  • Part A hospice co-insurance or co-payment
  • 60 days of inpatient mental health hospital care per calendar year
  • State-mandated benefits (e.g. annual pap smear, mammograms, etc.)

Massachusetts Supplement 1 Plan

The Massachusetts Supplement 1 Plan is more benefit-rich than the Core Plan. It has all the benefits in the Core Plan along with:

  • Medicare Part A inpatient hospital deductible
  • Medicare Part A Skilled Nursing Facility co-insurance coverage
  • Medicare Part B deductible coverage
  • Foreign travel emergency coverage
  • 120 days of inpatient mental health hospital care per benefit year
