Minnesota Medicare Supplement Plans

The state of Minnesota offers residents two Medigap plan options as opposed to the 10 available in most other states. The two options are the Minnesota Basic Plan and the Minnesota Extended Basic Plan. Minnesota also offers versions of Medigap plans K, L, M, N, and the high-deductible Plan F.

Minnesota Basic Plan

The Minnesota Medicare Supplement insurance plan known as the "Basic Plan" provides coverage for the following items:

  • Covers the Medicare Part B co-insurance cost (generally 20% of the Medicare-approved amount)
  • Covers the first three pints of blood each year for approved medical procedures
  • Part A hospice and respite copayment or co-insurance expenses
  • Parts A and B healthcare services received at home
  • 100 days of care at a Skilled Nursing Facility
  • 80% coverage for foreign travel emergency medical expenses
  • 50% of expenses for outpatient mental health services
  • 100% coverage for Medicare-covered preventive care
  • 20% coverage for physical therapy
  • Coverage for state-mandated benefits such as diabetic equipment, cancer screening, immunizations, etc.

Minnesota Extended Basic Plan

The Minnesota Extended Basic Plan incorporates the benefits of the Basic Plan with the following additional benefits:

  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • Skilled Nursing Facility care is covered at 120 days as opposed to 100 days for the Basic Plan
  • Pays 80% of 'Usual and Customary Fees' until out-of-pocket expenditures for these fees reach $1,000 when the plan will pay 100% of these fees for the rest of the calendar year
  • 80% coverage for Foreign Country coverage

Optional Riders

Medigap plans in Minnesota can offer four riders that enrollees may add to the Basic Plan. The riders are:

  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • 'Usual and Customary Fees' coverage (80% coverage for 'Usual and Customary Fees' until out-of-pocket expenditures for these fees reach $1,000 when the plan will pay 100% of these fees for the rest of the calendar year)
  • Non-Medicare preventive care
